- RAINFORESTS
- CORAL REEFS
- BIODIVERSITY
Biodiversity has been defined as the variety of plant and animal species found within an ecosystem. Biodiversity is threatened by the loss of species habitat caused by human activity and climate change. Since 1970, it is estimated that half the world’s vertebrae species have sharply declined. Nearly 40% of all marine and terrestrial populations as well as an astonishing 76% of all freshwater species have been greatly compromised. Advocates say this is more than unfortunate since the health of wildlife populations is a good indicator of the overall health of our planet.
With over 25,000 unique species, Hawai’i is the most isolated island chain and one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth. Boasting 10 of the 13 world climate zones, America’s only tropical rainforests, and ecosystems ranging from the deserts to the tropics. Plants and animals have evolved here unlike anywhere else. Hawai’i’s forests are critical parts of its biodiversity, protecting inhabitants from rain runoff, recharging aquifers and providing habitat for native species. However, Hawaii is one of a few states that have not established a National Forest to help protect this precious resource.
Proposed Legislation: Reintroduction of H.R.7045 - To require the Secretary of Agriculture to conduct a study on lands that could be included in a National Forest in Hawai'i, and for other purposes. (116th Congress 2019-2020)
Prospective Sponsor: Rep. Ed Case (HI)
