The 1968 Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination on the sale, rental or financing of housing based on race, religion or national origin. Laws prohibiting discrimination based on gender, those with disabilities and families with children were later passed. The Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity is charged with enforcing fair housing laws. Despite legal measures to protect all Americans from housing discrimination, the most commonly targeted victims are still African Americans. Redlining is still prevalent in many areas even though it has been outlawed. Studies have found that minorities who apply for mortgages are three times more likely to be rejected than similarly-qualified Caucasians. There were 28,843 complaints of housing discrimination in 2017. The three most common types of complaints were based on disability (57%), race (19%), and family status (9%). Advocates claim the biggest obstacle to fair housing rights is the federal government's failure to vigorously enforce the law.

- I oppose reforming current housing discrimination policy and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA).
- I support using tests to detect housing discrimination and award grants to study the causes and effects of housing discrimination by: 1.) Conducting a nationwide testing program to (a.) detect and document differences in the treatment of prospective renters, homebuyers or mortgage borrowers; (b.) measure patterns of adverse treatment because of the race, color, religion, sex, familial status, disability status, or national origin of a renter, homebuyer or borrower; and (c.) measure the prevalence of such discriminatory practices across housing and mortgage lending markets. 2.) Increasing funding for the fair housing initiative program. 3.) Implementing a grant program to assist public and private nonprofit organizations in (a.) conducting comprehensive studies of the causes and effects of housing discrimination and segregation on education, poverty, and economic development or on veterans and military personnel; and (b.) implementing pilot projects that test solutions to help prevent or alleviate housing discrimination and segregation. And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Rep. Maxine Waters (CA) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.
