Alternative fuels
Although electric and hybrid vehicle technology has greatly improved, many feel advances in battery technology are needed before these cars can compete with conventionally fueled vehicles. Alternative fuel vehicles using biofuels, natural gas and fuel cells hold much promise in reducing emissions. Cars powered by fuel cells are fueled with hydrogen and emit zero emissions. Toyota and Ford will soon offer fuel cell vehicles to consumers for about $70,000. Those concerned with the environment say more must be done to address the immediate problems resulting from climate change, in large part caused by the vehicles we drive. They say that much progress has been made during the past 30 years despite minimum government-funded research. They claim technical breakthroughs are close at hand but research will be the key to advancing alternative fuel technologies.

Pending Legislation:
H.R.1697 - E-Car Act
S.1053 - A bill to amend the National Energy Conservation Policy Act to promote alternative fueled vehicle fleets and infrastructure
