Winning Issue » AUTOMOBILE EMISSIONS

There are about 287 million registered vehicles on our roads today. The exhaust from carbon dioxide-emitting vehicles is known to be a primary cause of health problems and climate change. A typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year. And greenhouse gas emissions from transportation account for about 29% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, making it the largest contributor of such emissions. Most say that continued reduction of vehicle emissions will be difficult to achieve without the development of new advanced fuel technologies. Algae that are used in the production of biodiesel are an example of an advanced biofuel, as is cellulosic biofuels - high energy fuels derived from low nutrient, high yield plants such as woody biomass, energy gasses, forest slash and agriculture waste. Other advocates say that, after 149 years, it’s time to do away with the internal combustion engine altogether.

Proposed Legislation: Reintroduction of H.R.2764 - Zero-Emission Vehicles Act of 2019
Prospective Sponsor: Rep. Mike Levin (CA)

Options

  • I oppose reforming current automobile emissions policy and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Speaker Kevin McCarthy (CA).
  • I support requiring the EPA to establish a zero-emission passenger vehicle standard by:

1.) Setting a schedule for increasing the percentage of zero-emission vehicles a vehicle manufacturer delivers for sale, culminating in a requirement to sell only zero-emission vehicles from 2040 on.

2.) Requiring that by 2030, zero-emission vehicles comprise 50% of sales of new passenger vehicles.

3.) Increasing this requirement by 5% per year to 100% in 2040.

And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Rep. Mike Levin (CA) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.
