Winning Issue » ELECTION REFORM

There are many issues that are currently preventing our nation from realizing the hopes and intentions of our Founding Fathers’ dreams. Many of these issues relate to our election system. Since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in 2013, voter suppression has flourished. Many states have enacted laws that reduce the time allowed to vote and the number of locations in which to do so. Eligible voters are often removed from voter rolls on technicalities. Gerrymandered districts have given one party more seats in Congress than it deserves. Our elections systems are hacked by foreign entities who also inject money into the election process. Our social media platforms give audience to bogus actors who influence our electorate with misinformation and deceit. Money, much of it dark and dirty since the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens Untied decision, now rules the day. Advocates claim all these things have the effect of stripping representation from our citizens and giving it to special interests, incumbents and foreign nations. They say America needs comprehensive election reform in order to solve its election shortcomings.

Proposed Legislation: Reintroduction of S.2747 - Freedom to Vote Act (117th Congress 2021-2022) Prospective Sponsor: Sen. Amy Klobuchar (MN)

Options

  • I oppose reforming current election reform policy and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Leader Charles Schumer (NY).
  • I support addressing voter registration and voting access, election integrity and security, redistricting, and campaign finance by:

1.) Expanding voter registration (e.g., automatic and same-day registration) and voting access (e.g., vote-by-mail and early voting), and limiting removing voters from voter rolls.
2.) Establishing Election Day as a federal holiday.

3.) Declaring that the right of a U.S. citizen to vote in any election for federal office shall not be denied or abridged because that individual has been convicted of a criminal offense unless, at the time of the election, such individual is serving a felony sentence.

4.) Establishing a new criminal offense for conduct (or attempted conduct) to corruptly hinder, interfere with, or prevent another person from registering to vote or helping someone register to vote.

5.) Requiring states to conduct post-election audits for federal elections.

6.) Outlining criteria for congressional redistricting and generally prohibits mid-decade redistricting.

And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Sen. Amy Klobuchar (MN) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.
