Winning Issue » DISASTER AID

Major natural disasters can often be as terrifying as a terrorist attack. There have always been hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, volcanoes, floods, wildfires and droughts, but it seems the frequency and intensity of these events are increasing. Since the volcanic explosion of Mount St. Helens which killed 57 people in 1980, there have been 279 weather and climate disasters that have resulted in combined damages of nearly $2 trillion. This includes Hurricane Katrina which claimed the lives of 1,833 New Orleans residents in 2005. The devastating 2011 Hackleburg, Tuscaloosa and Joplin tornadoes all occurred within 5 weeks of each other. These EF4, 200 mph twisters, took the lives 233 Americans and caused more than $6 billion in damage. Likewise, the EF4 tornado that hit Oklahoma City, Moore and Newcastle in 2013 flattened an elementary school and killed 90 people including 20 children. This devastating tornado was nearly a mile wide and was in contact with the ground for at least 40 minutes. And Hurricane Sandy, that devastated New Jersey

Polling Options

  • I oppose reforming current disaster aid policy and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA).
  • I support improving accountability, accelerating needed disaster funding, streamlining the process for recovering communities, and providing assistance for: 1.) Disaster-related home repair and rebuilding assistance to families for permanent housing purposes. 2.) Disaster-related unmet needs of families who are unable to obtain adequate assistance from other sources. 3.) Other services that alleviate human suffering and promote the well-being of disaster victims. 4.) Economic and business activities (including food and agriculture) after a disaster to implement post-disaster economic recovery measures, including planning and technical assistance for long-term economic recovery plans, infrastructure improvements and business or infrastructure financing. And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Rep. Garret Graves (LA) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.
