Winning Issue » ELECTION REFORM

There are many issues that are currently preventing our nation from realizing the hopes and intentions of our Founding Fathers’ dreams. Many of these issues relate to our election system. Since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in 2013, voter suppression has flourished. Many states have enacted laws that reduce the time allowed to vote and the number of locations in which to do so. Eligible voters are often removed from voter rolls on technicalities. Gerrymandered districts have given one party more seats in Congress than it deserves. Our elections systems are hacked by foreign entities who also inject money into the election process. Our social media platforms give audience to bogus actors who influence our electorate with misinformation and deceit. Money, much of it dark and dirty since the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens Untied decision, now rules the day. Advocates claim all these things have the effect of stripping representation from our citizens and giving it to special interests, incumbents and foreign nations. They say America needs comprehensive election reform in order to solve its election shortcomings.

Polling Options

  • I oppose reforming current election reform policy and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Leader Charles Schumer (NY).
  • I support a comprehensive approach to election reform including addressing voter access, election integrity and security, political spending and ethics reform for the three branches of government by: 1.) Expanding voter registration and voting access and limit removing voters from voter rolls. 2.) Providing for states to establish independent, nonpartisan redistricting commissions. 3.) Sharing intelligence information with state election officials, protecting the security of the voter rolls, supporting states in securing their election systems, developing a national strategy to protect the security and integrity of U.S. democratic institutions, establishing in the legislative branch the National Commission to Protect United States Democratic Institutions, and other provisions to improve the cybersecurity of election systems. 4.) Expanding the ban on foreign nationals contributing to or spending on elections. 5.) Expanding disclosure rules pertaining to organizations spending money during elections, campaign advertisements and online platforms. 6.) Revising disclaimer requirements for political advertising. 7.) Establishing an alternative campaign funding system for certain federal offices. The system involves federal matching of small contributions for qualified candidates. 8.) Requiring a code of ethics for federal judges and justices, prohibiting Members of the House from serving on the board of a for-profit entity, expanding enforcement of regulations governing foreign agents, and establishing additional conflict-of-interest and ethics provisions for federal employees and the White House. 9.) Requiring candidates for President and Vice President to submit 10 years of tax returns. And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Sen. Joe Manchin (WV) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.
