Crime victims

On average, over 20 million Americans are victims of crime each year. Violent crimes including assault, rape, robbery and murder account for about 25% of all crimes, or about 1.2 million offenses. In addition to the offense itself, the costs to crime victims can be great. These include medical and psychological injuries that may require surgery, rehabilitation and therapy, as well as lost property and wages. The financial cost to society of all crimes has been estimated to be in the trillions of dollars each year. Every state now has a crime victim compensation fund to provide financial assistance to victims and their families, as does our federal government. As of 2020, the balance of our Crime Victims Fund was over $6 billion – financed by federal criminal fines, forfeited bail bonds and other penalties.

I oppose reforming current crime victim assistance policy and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA).
I support:
1.) Establishing the Office of Crime Victims’ Rights and a Coordinator which shall receive, investigate and adjudicate complaints relating to the alleged violation of the rights of a crime victim.

2.) Allowing a crime victim to submit to the Office of Crime Victims’ Rights a complaint alleging that an attorney for the Government violated the rights of a crime victim.

3.) Requiring the Coordinator to complete an investigation and issue a final order with respect to an alleged violation not later than 180 days after receiving a complaint.

4.) In the case that the Coordinator determines that the attorney for the Government violated the rights of a crime victim, the Coordinator may impose disciplinary action which may consist of: referring details to each State bar association of which the attorney is a member; suspension or termination from employment; or referral to the Justice Dept. if there is evidence of criminal misconduct.

And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.
