More than four million people are “food insecure” and 3.3 million can't get enough water to drink. Water shortage has increasingly become a major concern in Merrueshi village, interrupting operation of its health center and schools. Groundwater is important for the water supply to the Maasai. Boreholes are available roughly every 25 km, however several of them are not working. The operating boreholes are used virtually daily by the Maasai and their cattle. When it rains the Maasai get water from rain water pools. Nearly 60% of Maasai cattle have recently died of starvation and disease.. |

| TURKEY - SYRIA EARTHQUAKE |
| On February 6, a 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria, the deadliest earthquake in Turkey since the 526 Antioch earthquake. It was followed by a 7.7 earthquake several hours later. Widespread damage occurred in an area about the size of Germany. It was felt as far as Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Cyprus, and the Black Sea. There were more than 11,000 aftershocks in the weeks that followed. More than 55,100 deaths were confirmed, 47,900 of which were in Turkey. And an estimated 14 million people, or 16% of Turkey's population, were affected. The United Nations estimated that about 1.5 million people were left homeless. Damages were estimated at over $100 billion in Turkey and $5.1 billion in Syria.. |
