About 17,000 nursing homes are residences to more than 1.2 million mostly elderly Americans. These people reside at nursing homes for an average of about 900 days. However, many of these people are not living in nursing homes by choice. More than 80% of all our elderly say they would prefer to die at home if they could. Nevertheless, it is estimated that nearly half of all elderly Americans will move into nursing homes before dying. Studies have verified the rampant abuse of residents at some of these facilities. It found that one in three nursing homes had been cited for abuse violations within a two-year span. Advocates say that nursing home abuse is underreported by residents who fear reprisal. Other studies have found that more than 90% of our nursing homes have staffing levels that are below minimum acceptable standards. There is compelling evidence that staff ratios are strongly linked to the quality of care in all nursing homes.
Proposed Legislation: Reintroduction of S.782 - Nursing Home Reform Modernization Act of 2021

- I oppose reforming current nursing home policy and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Leader Charles Schumer (NY).
- I support providing greater oversight and resources to nursing homes that have chronically failed to meet Medicare and Medicaid standards by establishing an Advisory Council on Skilled Nursing Facility Rankings to recommend how to rank high-rated and low-rated facilities, and publically posting those rankings by:
1.) Identifying and increasing transparency around nursing homes with a history of serious quality issues.
2.) Ensuring these facilities receive more frequent inspections.
3.) Increasing educational resources for all under-performing facilities.
And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Sen. Robert Casey (PA) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.

If elected as a trustee, the campaign committee of Sen. Robert Casey (PA) will be unconditionally awarded the funds pledged to this issue along with a letter requesting him to favorably consider either reintroducing S.782 - Nursing Home Reform Modernization Act of 2021, or a similar version thereof.
- American Association of Retired Persons
If elected as a trustee, American Association of Retired Persons will be awarded the funds pledged to this issue along with a letter requesting these funds be used to advocate for the care and rights of those living in nursing homes.
