Electric vehicles

An electric vehicle (EV) is an alternative fuel vehicle that uses electric motors for propulsion instead of an internal combustion engine. Electricity is used as a fuel to power EV batteries. Unlike Hybrid vehicles which have an electric motor along with a gas-fueled engine, an EV exclusively uses chemical energy stored in rechargeable battery packs, with no secondary source of propulsion like a hydrogen fuel cell or a gasoline engine. The EV industry, led by Tesla, produce cars that not only reduce one’s carbon footprint, but offer lower maintenance costs than a conventional car. There are currently more than 6.55 million EVs on our roads today, or about 2% of all US vehicles. In 2024, U.S. electric vehicle sales hit a record 1.3 to 1.6 million units, about 10% of total new car sales, up from 2023 but with a lower growth compared to previous years. Driven by new models and incentives, Tesla's dominance has waned as other automakers gained share. Consumers showed strong interest, but a key federal tax credit change at year-end caused a sales spike in Q4, followed by a temporary dip last year.
