Winning Issue » DOGFIGHTING

Even though dogfighting is a felony in all 50 states and under federal law, dogfights for entertainment and gambling purposes still occur in most states. Most fighting dogs have grown up knowing only isolation, abuse and neglect, spending their lives in a cage or tethered to a chain and being injected with steroids to make them stronger and more aggressive. Fighting dogs are often severely injured in combat and many endure a savage death. Others later succumb to their injuries, and losing dogs are often discarded, killed or brutally executed as part of the “sport.” Critics say dogfighting is often associated with other forms of criminal activity including illegal gambling and possession of drugs and firearms. Our Humane Society estimates there are tens of thousands of dogfighters in the U.S., forcing hundreds of thousands of dogs to train, fight and suffer each year.

Polling Options
  • I oppose reforming current animal fighting policy, and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Speaker Mike Johnson (LA).

  • I support banning illegal animal fighting, particularly cockfighting, by banning related gambling, strengthening enforcement, and preventing animal trafficking, focusing on roosters and broader criminal networks linked to these activities by: 1.) Banning gambling on animal fighting ventures, including both in-person events and those broadcast via the internet or other media. 2.) Empowering private citizens to file civil lawsuits to stop violations of animal fighting laws, with potential fines of up to $5,000 per violation. 3.) Expanding forfeiture laws to allow for the seizure of land and buildings used to facilitate animal fighting. 4.) Making it illegal to use the U.S. Postal Service or other interstate instrumentalities to transport roosters for fighting purposes. And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Rep. Glenn Thompson (PA) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.
