FUSION ENERGY
Nuclear Fusion reactions power the Sun and other stars. Many believe the “holy grail” of clean energy lies in fusion technology because it produces electricity without creating any pollution or waste. A recent breakthrough in fusion energy research has, for the first time, produced more energy than that which was needed to start the reaction.

RUSSIA/UKRAINE
This war has taken tens of thousands of lives on both sides, decimated the Russian Armed forces, and caused Europe’s largest humanitarian and refugee crisis in 80 years, displacing 8 million Ukrainians. The war has also sparked a global food crisis, a spike in energy prices, and the fear of Russia resorting to the use nuclear weapons. Ukraine will face a massive rebuilding effort once this conflict is resolved.

VOTER SUPPRESSION
In 2013, our Supreme Court invalidated the preclearance provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act which protected eligible voters from discriminatory voting laws, saying there is no longer a need for the protections of this provision. Proving the Court wrong, states immediately began passing restrictive voter laws that had been judged illegal before the Court’s ruling. At least 20 states have passed new voting laws that restrict the registration of voters, the time available to cast a ballot, and the type of identification needed to do so.

POLICE MISCONDUCT
At least 10,000 civil rights complaints are filed for police misconduct each year, yet the total prevalence of this crime remains uncertain. Complaints of police brutality and abuse often arise from traffic stops and street encounters. Critics claim people of color experience the abuse of police power much more often than their peers.

ABORTION SERVICES
The 2022 Supreme Court Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that recognized women's constitutional right to abortion - a decision that will dramatically change life for millions of American women and exacerbate growing tensions in a deeply polarized country. This ruling restored the ability of states to ban abortion. Twenty-six states are either certain or considered likely to now ban abortion. Thirteen states have already enacted so-called trigger laws that ban abortion with Roe overturned. Since Dobbs, many states have enacted total abortion bans with no exceptions for rape, incest, the term of pregnancy, or the health of the mother.

FIREARM BACKGROUND CHECKS
Most people think it’s a good idea to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System has blocked more than 2 million gun purchases attempted by felons, dishonorably discharged veterans, domestic violence and stalking offenders, substance abusers, undocumented immigrants, the mentally ill and those who have renounced their citizenship. However, an estimated 40% of all gun transfers take place between private parties who are not required to perform background checks.

MAASAI DROUGHT
Just as in west Africa, Kenya's problems are being deepened by climate change. Kenya is enduring its worst drought in 40 years. More than four million people are “food insecure” and 3.3 million can't get enough water to drink. Water shortage has increasingly become a major concern in Merrueshi village, interrupting operation of its health center and schools. Groundwater is important for the water supply to the Maasai. Boreholes are available roughly every 25 km, however several of them are not working. The operating boreholes are used virtually daily by the Maasai and their cattle. When it rains the Maasai get water from rain water pools. Nearly 60% of Maasai cattle have recently died of starvation and disease.

TURKEY - SYRIA EARTHQUAKE
On February 6, a 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria, the deadliest earthquake in Turkey since the 526 Antioch earthquake. It was followed by a 7.7 earthquake several hours later. Widespread damage occurred in an area about the size of Germany. It was felt as far as Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Cyprus, and the Black Sea. There were more than 11,000 aftershocks in the weeks that followed. More than 55,100 deaths were confirmed, 47,900 of which were in Turkey. And an estimated 14 million people, or 16% of Turkey's population, were affected. The United Nations estimated that about 1.5 million people were left homeless. Damages were estimated at over $100 billion in Turkey and $5.1 billion in Syria.

DEMOCRACY RULES LAUNCH
After successfully completing the Federal Election Commission’s advisory opinion process, Democracy Rules is now offering no-charge membership registrations. We invite you to participate in this unique nonprofit endeavor. All adults are welcome!
During the 20 years of Democracy Rules’ development, we believed DR could help solve our most pressing problems. However, that belief was tempered by the fact that DR will not succeed without mass participation - our catch-22, if you will. We therefore urge our initial partners to be patient and to continue their weekly participation as we grow. We also respectfully request your help in spreading the word of our existence - to the benefit of us all.
