As housing prices have skyrocketed, the lack of access to affordable housing has become a source of financial insecurity for many American families. In communities throughout this country, people struggle to pay their bills while their rent increases and their paychecks remain the same. Hardworking residents continue to be pushed out of the neighborhoods in which they were raised, and some are ending up on the streets. Advocates say it is unacceptable that owning a home and paying rent is out of reach for the majority of Americans, especially those who have been historically disenfranchised. They claim it’s time to make housing more affordable and reverse decades of discriminatory policies that have denied black and brown families access to neighborhoods with decent paying jobs, high performing schools and a chance at upward mobility. They say that correcting these problems will create opportunities for families to afford the basics - including health care and education - and lift themselves into the middle class.
