STEM is an acronym for the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Typically, this term is used to describe school curriculum as it relates to our nation’s competitiveness in technology and workplace development. STEM advocates say there are many unfilled well-paying jobs for workers possessing STEM skills including machinists, equipment operators, technicians, and jobs in sciences and manufacturing. Studies have shown that 65% of those with a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field earn more than those with a master’s degree in non-STEM jobs, and 47% of those with bachelor’s degrees in STEM occupations earn more than PhDs in non-STEM occupations. Even so, many young people are still reluctant to study fields that require STEM curriculum. Some of the reasons for this include a lack of knowledge about STEM courses, the challenging nature of these subjects, and not being adequately prepared for STEM courses. And even though women now earn nearly 40% of all STEM bachelor's degrees, they earn only 19% of all bachelor's degrees awarded in engineering and only 18% in computer sciences. Advocates say one reason for this underrepresentation is that many women and minorities who are interested in these STEM careers often are not encouraged by teachers and employers to pursue these fields.
