Tibet has been a neighbor of China for 700 years. During most of that time it has acted as a de facto state, maintaining a separate culture and identity. These two countries peacefully coexisted for 650 years until Mao's army annexed and occupied Tibet in 1951. During the next 25 years, more than 1.2 million Tibetans were killed during the reforms of China's Cultural Revolution. The Dali Lama and the Tibetan government are currently in exile in India, along with some 10,000 Tibetans. Tibetans say the Chinese government has committed cultural genocide while attempting to assimilate Tibet under its



Polling Options

  • I oppose reforming current China/Tibet policy and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA).
  • I support: 1.) Providing funds to nongovernmental organizations for projects supporting Tibetan communities in Tibet in areas such as sustainable economic development, cultural preservation and education. 2.) Prohibiting the authorization of any new Chinese consulates in the United States until a U.S. consulate has been established in Lhasa, Tibet. 3.) Reauthorizing the Office of the U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues and expands the office's duties to include additional tasks, such as pursuing international coalitions to ensure that the next Dalai Lama is appointed solely by the Tibetan Buddhist faith community. 4.) Requiring the State Department to discuss U.S. efforts to promote the human rights of the Tibetan people, including the right to select and venerate their own religious leaders, in an existing periodic report on Tibet. And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Rep. James McGovern (MA) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.
